Obituary of Professor Shoshichi Kobayashi

I had a chance to visit my old college last Saturday to attend the wedding ceremony of a daughter of my friend and colleague. It has been long since I have been to the place and even longer to look around the campus. The ceremony was held at the Engineering House which is located at the farthest inside the campus. In the 70's, our Math building was located the most inside among the buildings, but now it is in the middle of the campus. The campus is growing rapidly and it must be hard to maintain such a big complex.

I met another friend of mine, who is a professor in the university. We had lunch together and had a long chat in his office. Among what he told me was the obituary of Professor Kobayashi, a world renowned mathematician who used to be a professor at UC Berkeley. He passed away last August at the age of 80. His given name Shoshichi(昭七) has the meaning of 'born in the 7th year of Showa(昭和)'. The transformation rule of Showa is adding 25 and he must have been born on 1932, he is 80 alright. He used to be the thesis advisor of this friend of mine when he was in Berkeley. Thanks to that when he visited Korea in the early 90's(?) he came to my Korea University and gave a talk. I forgot what he talked about, and I am sure it is about the geometric methods in complex analysis or so. But I clearly remember that he came to my office and we three had a chat for an hour or so. Among the chat he mentioned about old mathematics. His idea is that old math is never to be thrown away but must be kept and reviewed over and over. He mentioned also that he still kept the 1st edition math encyclopedia of Iwanami Shoten. This edition is pretty old, is missing many new maths and contains some very old ones. I still keeps this old edition owned by my father. In the 80's, he was so very much excited to order the, then newly reprinted, Oeuvres of Elie Cartan, my friend said, and he (my friend) also had ordered them. This book is old fashioned but many people i have met mentioned it as a very important reference. It is very hard to find the copies of this book in Korea, and I recently purchased some parts of it as used books.

Professor Kobayashi's mathematical works became the starting point of not just my friend's research but also mine and that of another friend of ours in Postech. But already the 1st generation of complex geometry and geometric function theory of 20th century is retiring. This field of math had been in the center of math during the mid 20th century, but due to its difficulty in problems and due to the applied math trends, it looks like giving way to other fields. Some 10 years ago Professor Kobayashi collected the materials in this field into a huge book named 'Hyperbolic Complex Spaces,' which was published from Springer Verlag. He also wrote two other books, 'Holomorphic Mappings on Complex Manifolds' and 'Foundations of Differential Geometry (with Professor Nomizu)' in his early years, and these became a bible in our field. Another small book named 'Transformation Groups in Differential Geometry' is less known but it was very important to me. He also wrote several texts in Japanese.

When I met Professor Hironaka when I was a student, he mentioned about being able to be free from anxiety is the key in studying math, and mentioned Professor Kobayashi as a young genius finishing his PhD in 2 years and being very fruitful. Professor Kobayashi may look a bit hard to come close to at first sight but as I talked to him I found he is very caring in every ways. This seems to be his power which kept him from being easily-shaken and which made him a master in this delicate field of mathematics.

Last August another famous mathematician, Bill Thurston, passed away. They were two of the most important figures who shaped the modern mathematics in this form. When he spoke in Korea University, the honorarium was very small, and I added the university souvenir, a tie with a university emblem on it. It was nothing compared to his talk but he looked very pleased to receive it. It is my hope that I had learned a little bit of something, if not math, from him through this occasion.
